In 1971, after visiting relations in Ireland on a holiday, Roberta & Sandro Pieri fell in love with the county and the people here so much that they decided to move over. They ran a restaurant in Dundalk for 15 years before going back to Tuscany because of the trouble in the nearby North.  They had adopted an Irish bay boy called David and lived back home for 12 years.

They fell in love with Galway where they often visited and decided to open a new restaurant in Salthill, calling it Da Roberta with a sign outside proclaiming it to be “a piece of Italy”. People fell in love with the real Italian food. Roberta and Sandro were born to be restaurateurs, they chatter away excitedly to each other in Italian while gesticulating wildly – they may look like they are having a raging argument, but they are simply having an Italian conversation.

In February 2005 they opened a second restaurant called L’Osteria as they were so busy in Da Roberta and turning people away. L’Osteria was initially opened as a wine bar but then turned into a cozy intimate, with Italian mural on the wall and candle light restaurant with a massive wine list.
